Far Away Places
Nostalgic songs of travel

Open the travel section of your Sunday paper and feast your eyes on scenic vistas, historic castles, palate-teasing food and vintage wines…all the trappings of a dream holiday. But need it be just a dream? Or can we enjoy it to the fullest without ever having to board a 'plane? The answer, of course, is a resounding 'yes'… and the passport is music. Music, that greatest of sorcerers, is able, in just a few notes, to create its own reality. So, if you're a dreamer (and aren't we all), let us help you 'escape' …on wings of song… to a wonderful world of enchantment.

All we ask you to do is sit back, close your eyes, relax and drift away to those 'Faraway Places' (with Margaret Whiting as our wistful tour-guide). Our fabulous, fantasy trip will take you to the four corners of the earth…to such exotic ports-of-call as Brazil, China, Africa, Italy, Spain and India. And, as an added pleasure, on this magical, musical carpet ride, you'll find yourself accompanied by your favourite, easy-listening stars.

On the first leg of our journey, we take a trip on 'A Slow Boat to China'. Kay Kyser is our captain and he will navigate us, smoothly and gently, to this mysterious and colourful land. Fun must be an essential ingredient of our global holiday and, for two 'stopovers' in Africa, who better than Bing Crosby and Bob Hope to accompany us on that 'Road to Morocco', whilst Danny Kaye and The Andrews Sisters provide their own and comic thoughts on finding themselves in the Congo with 'Civilisation'.

Please adjust your watches because we're now taking off and heading towards Europe. Anyone who has ever seen the Mediterranean under a clear sky and felt its freshening winds will recognise it at once. With its unique qualities of light and colour, it is like no other and just crossing on to Italian soil takes us across a frontier in ourselves, to a land where romance lives. Josef Locke recognises this indisputable fact as he implores us all to 'Return to Sorrento'. And for the passion and excitement that imbue the Spanish, what better than that 'Lady of Spain' who arrives arm-in-arm with Eddie Fisher.

'C'est si bon' is the delightfully carefree song that the inimitable Louis Armstrong regales us with when we arrive in France and the joys of Vienna are so perfectly brought to musical life with 'The Harry Lime Theme' (oh, how the zither immediately identifies this glorious city) and the yearning beauty of 'Vienna, City of My Dreams', courtesy of Anton Karas and Richard Tauber respectively.

And there is still much to more to see and look forward to in our special collection of musical postcards. We hope that we have given you enough tempting examples to whet your appetite. The beauty of it is that you can repeat this same global journey as and when the mood takes you…without ever having to leave the comfort of your armchair!
