Thoughtful hymns & religious songs

Count your blessings while you may,
For we are here but little time to stay;
All around are hearts sincere and true,
Lovely things abound just waiting for you;

Count your blessings while you may,
The big or small, whichever comes your way,
For then you'll find this world a place of love;
You will count your blessings from above.
Edith Temple

Sentimental? Yes! Touching? Yes again! This unique collection of inspiring hymns and songs is created to lift the spirit. Songs that are very moving in their simplicity mingle with sophisticated compositions by some of the great song composers of the past. Some are taken straight from popular music and were real hits in their day. Other pieces have remained stalwarts of Sunday school or church services for a century or more. All have been newly arranged for vocal quintet and a variety of accompanying keyboard instruments by our conductor, Sarah Tenant-Flowers.

My particular favourites from the popular songs include 'Scarlet ribbons', which is indeed a very sentimental song, but with a surprising power underpinning it, and 'The rosary' which was a huge hit in the United States. Of the hymns, most are tinged with the colours of sunset, and make evening music of the highest quality. 'Nearer my God to thee' and 'All through the night' are particularly fine. Stephen Adams' 'The holy city' is a quite splendid piece, with a dramatic piano accompaniment, while in a similar vein, Sullivan's 'The Lost Chord' was heard in every parlour in the land at the end of the nineteenth century. Dvorak's 'New World' symphony is the given the addition of a splendid text in 'Goin' home', and it's beautifully sung by our tenor Mark Wilde.

So sit back, relax and let this fine music refresh you as it drifts gently by.
