Music for quiet meditation

A single melodic line, regular and mellifluous meanders through the gentle acoustics of a medieval cloister. After a while the music takes us out of ourselves, its calm, hypnotic pace bringing peace and calm as it works its way through the ancient rituals of the early church.

The first ten tracks of our selection follow the pattern of a medieval Mass sung for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, associated with Mary's ascent into heaven. There are 'proper' pieces connected only with this day which are woven around the 'ordinary': the texts and music of the mass which would be used every day whenever Mass was celebrated. On this recording these pieces use a special tune 'cunctipotens genitor Deus' which became very popular and was often used as the starting point for newly composed works for choir or instruments.

After the Mass we present a series of psalms and antiphons. The 150 psalms which together make up one of the books of the Old Testament were read or sung through to a simple chant on a repeated monthly cycle throughout the church's year. Elaborate antiphons, which were sung at the beginning and end of a psalm, were added to embellish and adorn the simple chant for specific days of saints or other important church occasions.
