Music from the ancient Tamil and Carnatic tradition. This music for a small ensemble is centred around the astonishing vocal talents of one of the world's leading Carnatic singers. Voice and instruments praise Lord Shiva, (tracks 4 & 10 are based on the same melody), using the traditional rags and talas of the classical musical tradition of Southern India . Lively tracks begin the album, but the final long track draws us into a meditation and asks us to be still and quiet as the soloist intones an hypnotic prayer.

From the Ode to Lord Shiva

O Lord, who forever dances in thick darkness!
Dancer at Tillai, dweller in the South in Pantiya land!
You sever the painful cycle of rebirth.

Although you are beyond all words,
If your devotees cry out to you
And if beneath your feet they come to understand the meaning of their song,
They will depart to Sivapuram and there abide,
Bowing at Siva's feet amid the praising throng.
